In this movie, Hollywood trades lightly on the worst stereotypes of the South. In their mocking tone, they take genuine social angst and the hardship of the young, and turn it into sophomoric humor to generate a project and a modest box office return.

If you’re not from the South, you’ll just shake your head and laugh at the depiction of the silly rednecks, just like you always pictured them. If you’re from the South, you’ll realize that losing a civil war means 150 years later the dominant film making industry can mock your cultural underpinnings for no particular reason at all. If this movie had screened at Ft. Sumter in 1861, I’d say the start of the civil war had a whole different and legitimate reason.
