BODY MASS INDEX THReSHOLDS

BMI is a convenient way of representing weight adjusted for height. It is weight (in kg) divided by height squared (in m).

BMI = Wt/Ht2 / Thresholds From CBT-E Manual (Fairburn, 2008)

  • Significantly Underweight - 17.5* >
  • Underweight 17.6 - 18.9*
  • Low Weight - 19.0 - 19.9
  • Healthy Weight - 20.0 - 24.9
  • Overweight - 25.0 - 29.0
  • Obesity - 30.0 <

An online BMI calculator can be obtained through the US Department of Health here.

* At a BMI of 18.9 or less and 30.0 or more, most people experience at least some adverse physical effects of being underweight. Those with a BMI of 17.5 or less are at high risk of physical and psychosocial effects of being underweight. Few people in Western society can maintain a BMI in this range without actively restricting their food intake.

A BMI between 20.0 and 24.9 is viewed as optimal for health.
